Beginner – Intermediate Throwing Class

Instructor: Bonnie Richter

8 Weeks: Thursdays, 6 – 8:30 p.m.

Tuesday Evenings:  April 10th – May29th

Cost:   $300 (includes clay, glaze and firing)

This class is for anyone that wants to learn to throw on the potter’s wheel and for those that want to improve their throwing skills.  You’ll begin with wedging and throwing the basic bowl and cup shape.  Our focus will be on centering, pulling up and creating even walls.  Everyone will work at their own pace to progress to more advanced forms and handles.  During this class you’ll have the opportunity to prepare a few of your pieces for a pit firing.  This includes learning to burnish your work for different finish effects.  We’ll work on lids, different styles of rims, feet and slightly altered forms.  You’ll learn how to trim your work and finally, glaze your pieces for their final firing in our electric kilns.  The pit fire pieces will be fired in an outdoor pit with organic materials.  The organics, flame and smoke will color these chosen pieces in beautiful and unpredictable ways.

Handbuilding for Pit Fire

Instructor: Bonnie Richter

Thursday Evenings:  April 12th.- May 31st

January 9th – March 6thth (no class Feb. 20th))

Cost:   $300  (includes clay, glaze and firing)

In this class we will be making pots that we will fire in one of the oldest methods for firing clay, the pit fire.  Instead of using glazes, the pit fire uses organic materials, fire and smoke to color the clay.  The results are beautiful, traditional and unpredictable.

We’ll start by using coil, pinch, slab and extrusion methods to create our pots.  Each week we’ll work on new projects like masks, tiles, sculptural forms and bottles while also preparing each one for the pit fire.  You’ll learn how to make different finishing compounds that’ll be used on your pots as well as several different ways to burnish your pots.  Some methods are traditional while some are newer variations.   We will discuss what materials to use on your pots to help add color during the firing. You’ll help to load and fire the pit fire and, finally, you’ll learn how to clean and seal your finished works.

This class is a great place for beginners as well as those with more experience with handbuilding.  The projects will reinforce good handbuilding practices and offer new forms to challenge everyone.   We will be making masks, sculptural forms, vases type forms, etc.  Bring your ideas and desire to have fun.  We’ll supply the clay and firing.
